Best AirTag & tracker detector app for Android: 5 apps compared

No single app is the best AirTag detector on Android. Pick by which trackers you need to find. All five apps below scan for free on Android. TFind detects Samsung SmartTag, SmartTag+ and Tile as well as AirTag; AirGuard detects AirTag, SmartTag and Google Find Hub trackers, with no ads and no paid tier, and rates highest of the five. The two AirTag-branded rivals carry the most reviews. Apple’s own app rates lowest.

Most “AirTag detector” apps on Android are built around Apple’s AirTag. If you own a Samsung SmartTag or a Tile, or you just want an app that says what it does on Android, the choice narrows fast. Here’s an honest look at the main options, using Google Play data read on 14 September 2026.

Two apps in this table are now called almost the same thing. The app by Tag Tracker LLC has gone back to the name Tracker Detect: AirTag Scanner, after a spell as Tag Tracker: Bluetooth Scanner. Apple’s app is simply Tracker Detect. Check the developer name under the title before you install: one is Apple, the other is not.

Both independent rivals are still rated higher than TFind, though the gap has narrowed: TFind rose from 3.5 to 3.7 between 12 August and 14 September 2026, while the Tag Tracker LLC app slipped from 4.4 to 4.3. They are older and carry far more reviews — 11.7K and 11.4K against TFind’s 402 — which also puts them above TFind in Play search. The reason to pick TFind is not its score. It is that neither of them detects a Samsung SmartTag, and TFind does.

AirGuard — the one the community recommends, and why

Ask on Reddit how to find an AirTag with an Android phone and the answer, in thread after thread, is AirGuard. It deserves the recommendation. It comes from the Secure Mobile Networking Lab at TU Darmstadt, it is open source, and its Play listing says it “will never be monetized – there are no ads and no paid features”. It scans in the background, warns after a tracker has been seen in at least three places, lets you play a sound on supported tags, keeps its location history on the device, and reads Google Find Hub trackers — a family TFind does not read at all. It rates 4.6 on Google Play.

Against that, TFind has two honest things to say. It reads Tile, which AirGuard’s listing does not name. And it is a commercial app with a support line behind it. Neither of those is a rating, and if you want a free, open-source anti-stalking scanner, AirGuard is the right first choice. The two apps share one weakness the reviews of both describe: Apple devices that are not trackers — AirPods in particular — can show up as if they were, because they change their identifier every day.

Why Apple’s own app rates lowest

Search Google Play for “airtag detector” and Apple’s Tracker Detect comes up first. It also holds the lowest score on this page: 3.0, across more than five thousand reviews, on an app last updated in December 2025 — nine months without a release, while every other app here shipped one this year.

The reason shows up again and again in its reviews. Tracker Detect scans only while you hold it open and press the button. There is no background mode. So the app helps only when you already suspect a tracker and think to go looking for one — which is the opposite of how somebody finds out they are being followed. Its two most-upvoted reviews are both people asking Apple to add background scanning.

TFind does run in the background. That is a real difference, and it is the one comparison on this page TFind wins outright. It is not free, though: the check keeps a permanent notification in your status bar and it uses battery, and it stops when you close it.
